11:27:29 From David Stoney to Everyone:

Christian Sardet has studied ocean plankton for many years and has some beautiful and scary books about plankton.  He has said that plankton  population is down by about 30%.  Bad news for earth’s O2 levels. ::https://www.wired.com/2015/06/plankton-wonders-of-the-drifting-world/::

11:43:16 From M Low to Everyone:

Costa Rica can do it!! Thanks for leading the charge Randall, Max and ED!

11:43:31 From Tina Michel to Everyone:

Biodiversity conservation is a human right!

11:45:08 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

do we teach Natural Science in schools anymore ? Seems like we have lost the learning about the intellgences of Nature

11:45:13 From David Stoney to Everyone:

Most of the biomass of the oceans, around 98%, is made up of plankton, viruses, bacteria, jelly fish, and larvae.  This is the base of the ocean’s food chain.  Wrecking it with uncontrolled global warming and ocean acidification is suicidal.  Hard not to see controlling green house gases as THE most critical problem we’ve ever faced.

11:45:57 From jacob mathew to Everyone:

Just change  a market place for indigenous communities in south India has launched a brand of forest produce called the third share: When they harvest honey, they leave one third  for nature , for sloth bears for example, they retain a one third share for themselves and they sell one third to customers outside of the Community, which is what they call it  the “Third Share”

11:45:59 From Kala (Tat tvam Asi) to Everyone:

Five-ten years of human vegan-ism would restore the global ecosystem massively🐬💙🙏

11:46:39 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

We have to stop consuming on every level!! Stand back and take less!!

11:46:43 From Tina Michel to Everyone:

Love "The Third Share"! Thank you

11:47:28 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

   The Third Share!! Sounds BRILLIANT!!

11:47:36 From Ben Roberts to Everyone:

The North American Marine Alliance is a wonderful organization that supports small scale fishermen and opposes the industrial model of fisheries management.  Well worth checking out: ::https://www.namanet.org/::

11:48:07 From David Stoney to Everyone:

   Here’s another good website - ::https://planktonchronicles.org/en/::

11:48:38 From Ben Roberts to Everyone:

   About NAMA (link above):

"We are a fisherman-led organization working at the intersection of marine conservation and social, environmental, economic, and food justice. We focus on shifting seafood markets and policies while building community. The recent elections in the US have created an atmosphere of uncertainty. Even before the results, we were concerned the two candidates' platforms represented the two polarized views we often hear about in fisheries: total privatization vs. total anarchy. We believe there are other options to explore, and within that range lays the movement we have been cultivating."

11:49:10 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

fish aka Life doesn't have a value until you kill it??!!!

   That's capitalism, @marilyn!

11:51:00 From jacob mathew to Everyone:

   ::https://justchangeindia.com/::

11:51:02 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

How we live WITH the ocean instead of making money OUT of it!!

11:51:03 From Ben Roberts to Everyone:

Just like a tree doesn't have value (i.e. show up in GDP) until you turn it into some product to sell.

11:51:37 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

So we need to stop buying form the big companies!!

11:52:20 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

3 bb people who depend on Ocean is <50% of humans - the math says that cities have an economic vested interest in health of Oceans

11:52:33 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

Thank you. focus on the good stories and we'll all stop shopping!!!

11:53:06 From Tina Michel to Everyone:

LOVE the sea turtles! Inspiring to hear thus, Randall.

11:54:54 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

By this point (2021) anyone with some common sense who is LISTENING is aware that we need massive change. And that means every single person as 'leaders' and corporations are not going to change!!! Luckily as time goes by, there are loads of us who care - and listen!!!

11:55:17 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

Love how Randall and Max create relationships with real people, economies thru integrated coastal marine program - sounds like Monica Sharma's Conscious Full Spectrum Response - bravo

11:56:08 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

Wonderful words!!"Stop chasing sharks and STOP killing them!!"

11:56:55 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

How can satellite overview/assessment monitor the fisheries you are talking about ?

11:57:04 From jacob mathew to Everyone:

What is the size of by catch world wide? I expect it will be a huge number. I like the notion of eat fish only if you have caught it yourself or know who caught it and how.

11:58:01 From Margo King to Everyone:

Another vital organization  THE INLAND OCEAN COALITION

   Why An Inland Ocean Movement?

The ocean is our planet's life support system, and its health is in crisis. We often think that to protect the ocean, you have to be near the ocean. But we all have a direct impact on the cycles of life in the ocean—no matter where we live. The changes we need to make to address the largest threats facing our seas—lowering carbon emissions, reducing plastic and other pollution, protecting our fisheries, safeguarding watersheds, promoting marine protected areas, and fighting for legislation that supports our ocean, waterways, and climate—can happen from anywhere in the world.

The Inland Ocean Coalition's approach is unique in that we give inland communities a voice in protecting our ocean by empowering them to become ocean champions in their communities and connecting them with their legislative leaders. Our unique niche allows us to work with our chapters and supporters around the country to convey to our legislative lea

11:59:02 From Stanley Pokras Pokras to Everyone:

There is a wonderful wealth of information in the chats. The ChatPeople collect the chats into ::http://OtherNetworks.org::. The next step is to categorize the information. Please write to me If you would like to help catalog and index the information we all contribute to the chats. stan@othernetworks.org

11:59:28 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

Exactly - only eat fish if it includes certain conditions so - big picture (Marilyn) - regulation to monitor. E.g. 'line caught' makes a good restriction.

12:00:05 From Margo King to Everyone:

   Re above inland ocean coalition

Our unique niche allows us to work with our chapters and supporters around the country to convey to our legislative leaders that we all have a stake in ocean protection, even if we live inland.

The Inland Ocean Coalition is working to build ocean conservation constituencies around the US. We hope you'll join us to protect the ocean we all love.

12:01:22 From Margo King to Everyone:

How will save rise affect all of this work❓💕🙏🏽

12:01:25 From Harry Uvegi to Host and Panelists:

What about the oysters?  nature cleans oceans and deltas

12:01:40 From Charles Bensinger to Everyone:

Is ocean acidification affecting your work?

12:01:42 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

Just to see people speaking in this way is helpful and inspiring!! Thank you

12:02:25 From Charles Bensinger to Everyone:

How is ocean warming impacting your work?

12:02:28 From Stephanie Shuler to Everyone:

Thank you everyone for your water wisdom and care. mauialohaproject.org ecovillage initiative.

12:02:28 From Jean Stevens to Everyone:

Brilliant discussion today!  What are of planet water is most endangered for fish population?

12:02:39 From kathryn davison to Host and Panelists:

Can any of you speak to the current status of bans on ULF sound testings in the oceans? The soundings are so damaging to the integrity of marine life.

12:04:01 From M Low to Everyone:

California must listen and act! Thanks Max!

12:04:05 From Angela Atwell to Host and Panelists:

How do we become active in the Northeast of the US? Urban people are aware but do not know what to do to deal with Maine, Massachusetts, New York Atlantic fishing.

12:05:18 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

That's why stop buying coca cola!! (and Nestle water!!)

12:05:25 From Sharon Truax to Everyone:

   Thank you Ed.

12:05:32 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

Any comments on the recent news that bacteria can consume micro-plastics in ocean?

12:06:29 From Kala (Tat tvam Asi) to Everyone:

What should we actually do as alternative to this massive amount of plastic we are buying for our food?? This is pivotal now

12:06:39 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

Yes, Max, it's the bigger picture - all of those 'poisons' together!!

12:06:53 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

Talk about plastic ubiquity (pardon the pun) - but how can Remembrance Day Poppies be sold with plastic "stems"???? Instead of the old pin!!! We are soooooo wholistically ignorant

12:07:44 From Stanley Pokras to Everyone:

A wonderful TED Talk: Why I live a zero waste life --- ::https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF72px2R3Hg::

12:07:51 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

Stop buying it!! Buy from farmers' markets (or from stalls that sell cheap fruit and veg - in cities at least) - no plastic involved

12:08:08 From Kat Haber to Everyone:

US EPA efforts on ocean acidification: ::https://www.epa.gov/ocean-acidification/what-epa-doing-address-ocean-and-coastal-acidification::

12:08:15 From Tina Michel to Everyone:

YES, Max! We have the capacity. Let's DO IT!

12:09:34 From Sharon Truax to Everyone:

Yes, a top down approach - stop the “big Fish” polluters first.

12:10:06 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

@Max congrats on getting Oceans on the agenda - hard to believe this is new!!!

12:11:08 From jacob mathew to Everyone:

According to some estimates, global bycatch may amount to 40 percent of the world's catch, totaling 63 billion pounds per year.

12:12:44 From jacob mathew to Everyone:

With ocean rise that is certainly going to happen, it is so crazy that there is not enough resources that is looking at ocean conservation and regeneration.

12:12:52 From Richard Page to Everyone:

Red seaweed from the ocean is touted to reduce methane output from cattle, but in practice seems to be limited to dairy cows. Can this scale up to be a great help? (Oh, a teaspoon of seaweed helps the methane go down, the methane go down, in a most delightful way…)

12:12:55 From David Stoney to Everyone:

Yes, Marilyn, our wholistic ignorance is as if we’re stuck with a subclinical left hemispheric seizure for knowing the world and our place in it.

12:13:05 From Yasmina Groenstein to Everyone:

@ Kala Clothing -Every single piece you/we have on, comes from manufacturing to market -to us, in a plastic bag.  We must be conscious and compassionate consumers.

12:13:15 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

Adaptation instead regeneration is a losers ethos

12:13:29 From Diane Skidmore to Everyone:

Thank you Randall!! This is a emergency!! We need to act now!! All the ordinary people need to change their ways!!!

12:13:35 From David Stoney to Everyone:

   Right on, Marilyn!

12:14:08 From Matthew Martin to Everyone:

got to globally stop ocean dredging because it destroys ocean bottoms and sea grasses

12:14:17 From Maureen Edwardson to Everyone:

Terry Lilley from Hawaii is a marine biologist that documents the reefs there, also international reefs, also creates experiential educational programs for children and youth.  Also creates documentaries on sharks in particular.  All this for National Geographic.  He had to leave his home in Kauai and now is based on Oahu because of political harrassment as a bit part of his focus is trying to make governments accountable to the already existing laws.

12:14:24 From kathryn davison to Host and Panelists:

I also have a question about rights of large vessels, like oil tankers and ocean floor trawlers, who get away with such destructive designs.

12:14:24 From Ben Roberts to Everyone:

re kelp and cows, Zairah Khan of Blue 02 attempted to make this a viable social enterprise and determined it was not a good model.

12:14:28 From jacob mathew to Everyone:

Kelp is so temperature sensitive esp the kelp forests, ocean warming seems to be far more locally than global atmospheric warming

12:15:09 From kathryn davison to Host and Panelists:

Water filtration is so essential at all points along the flow chain…

12:15:17 From Ben Roberts to Everyone:

You can follow up with Zairah if you want to know more: ::https://www.linkedin.com/in/zairah-khan-1594a91/::

12:15:25 From Matthew Martin to Everyone:

But in costa rica, doesn't the sewage get treated and steralized before entering ocean?

12:15:46 From Stanley Pokras to Everyone:

What movie is Max talking about?

12:16:19 From Kala (Tat tvam Asi) to Everyone:

No- sewage isn’t being treated before dumping in the oceans  Even in

12:16:24 From Eduard Muller to Matthew Martin, Host and Panelists:

Most of it is going untreated to the ocean and several beaches have lost the Blue flag status due to fecal contamination.

12:16:26 From Kala (Tat tvam Asi) to Everyone:

   Australia

12:16:28 From Maureen Edwardson to Everyone:

Kauai is home for international naval war games every two years for 2 months where they blast war ships which destroy the oceans and all of life therein!!

12:18:00 From Matthew Martin to Everyone:

I don't know about that so much.... here in monetery bay the sea otters are dojng fine... lots of them   and a whole lot of kelp as well  !!

12:18:19 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

Ed's comments about waste cycling into ocean - makes me wonder about our Circular Economy approaches - is the Ocean included into our economic systems - or is it still considered "away" where we just dispose of our waste?? No wonder Oceans are part of many tipping points - 75% of Earth's surface … kinda like the dark energy that we are ignorant of at cosmic scale??

12:18:25 From kathryn davison to Host and Panelists:

@MaureenEdwardson, thank you for raising this vital need to stop the ULF and other military actions that can really alter ocean health.

12:18:47 From Richard Page to Everyone:

What is name of movie, please? We have an eco movie decision for our city endorsement and public playing

12:19:11 From Rita Marsh to Everyone:

@Marilyn - comment on the relationship of Integral Cities and relationship to the health of the oceans. So many megatropoliae have direct relationship with the ocean.

12:19:34 From Kat Haber to Everyone:

A beach my son & I used to walk and do coastal cleanups for 15 years where we would see immense diversity now has no clams, mussels, and sea stars. He is now 25 and a shore fishing guide in Alaska & Hawaii. His belief is to prepare humans for feeding themselves when our fishing stocks are no longer able to provide protein. He is studying multitrophic aquaponics for the same reason. We speak of the breakdown of base of Goldwater food chain…anecdotal evidence/sadness. How might we value life rather than market valuing when we Xtract life from Earth?

12:19:40 From Ben Roberts to Everyone:

   Right on, Eduard!

12:19:47 From Dr. Carroy (Cuf) Ferguson to Everyone:

A humble observation:  as the ocean is 70-75% of Earth’s “body”, so are our physical bodies made up of 70-75% water—a macro & micro point of view re: how we deal with both biodiversity systems..

12:20:19 From jacob mathew to Everyone:

   My octopus teacher

12:20:19 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

@Rita - see my question above re metrics of Cities and Oceans - we are intimately interconnected

12:20:21 From Rita Marsh to Everyone:

@Dr. Carroy - my thoughts well expressed.

12:20:40 From Kat Haber to Everyone:

   bycatch is massive in Alaska

12:21:05 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

@Dr. Carroy - right on re our ocean body

12:21:22 From Matthew Martin to Everyone:

alot can be protected by protecting coastal biosystems.  And also Stop ocean bottoimtrolling

12:21:34 From Kala (Tat tvam Asi) to Everyone:

Seaspiracy on Netflix -Jim just mentioned

12:22:24 From Lorraine McKeegan to Host and Panelists:

Jim do you remember the Tree sisters presenter said that kelp and the trees are dependent on each other.  Kelp is the blotting paper and we use it in natural medicine to absorb free radicals

12:22:43 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

Fractally speaking the Oceans are Gaia's heart/blood system and the 75% of our body as water/fluids - fractally speaking we are committing suicide as we kill the Oceans

lithium can be a byproduct of geothermal energy-::https://www.motortrend.com/news/gm-invests-geothermal-lithium-mining-project/::  How do we act with precaution in our urgency to “Save the Ocean?”

12:23:43 From Matthew Martin to Everyone:

How about placing an econ Value on all carbon-storing bio-life, so that any depletion costs a good amount of penalty

12:24:36 From Rita Marsh to Everyone:

@Randall thanks for raising awareness of the by-catch

12:24:46 From Marilyn Hamilton to Everyone:

@Randall - shocking bycatch metrics - as you explain it is immoral

12:25:11 From Kat Haber to Everyone:

Fishery management is completely controlled by commercial fishers in Alaska. Long liners-so destructive.

12:26:36 From Sharon Truax to Everyone:

12:29:23 From Kat Haber to Everyone:

   We need courage.

12:29:27 From Kala (Tat tvam Asi) to Everyone:

Ethics for Life from a total perspective is what we need!

12:29:48 From kathryn davison to Host and Panelists:

These ARE good stories! Real developments, real challenges are good news - so we know where and how to get engaged….

12:30:03 From Yasmina Groenstein to Everyone:

It can be positive... my heart sunk :(

12:30:07 From Ben Roberts to Everyone:

From Zairah Khan's latest Medium piece:

"The outcomes from COP26 this week instil me with the idea that our culture is in decay. We will either let things go voluntarily or it will happen by default in time. And it makes me doubt whether all of the debates really matter, because they are based on this binary notion that the planet depends on the agreement of a few, mostly white, men. Greta has called COP a failure. I agree with her, except the fact that it is a necessary failure.

A failure which underlines the need to accept that our institutions are obsolete in dealing with the present challenges. In my view, accepting that decay is a crucial step in moving forward. Therefore, rather than calling COP a failure, which is another binary statement, I prefer to think of it as the dismantling of an illusion. The start of something new."

12:33:39 From Ben Roberts to Everyone:

Very interesting and significant observations about the change in the COP atmosphere, Max.

12:33:58 From Kat Haber to Everyone:

Thank you all here today for everything happening to balance FOR life. I so appreciate you marathon efforts! Good to hear that the vibe is urgent, clear…are corporates/governments/NGO’s making the scale of commitments in time?

12:34:20 From Dita Vizoso to Everyone:

Greetings from Glasgow!  A drizzly evening after sunshine and rather warm day.  What strikes me today is the feeling in much of the city of business as usual, as if COP wasn't happening here anymore.  I can feel my own tiredness after 9 days of almost constant actions, and I can see that in fellow activists.  It brings to me the importance of rest and spaciousness (we're all needing it).  And the wish——and doubt——that we will have the energy to unfurl the actions we need to take after this Friday.

12:35:07 From Ben Roberts to Everyone:

Ed ,Maximiliano, Randall - thanks so much really appreciate your stories of reality checks - even the "negative" stories are critical for us to hear - and finishing with the shift in awareness at COP is critical too - let us support all our Politicians to change - and be the voices that let the companies know they must become servants of Life as well!!!!!
