A question would be 'would the 2 elderly gents' greeting incoming people, who did that out of perhaps a philosophical/spiritual intent, moving (psychologically) towards the connection of 'this act will feed me'? In other words, the original intent may come from the non-physical realms, whereas it is now being connected to the physical realm. Will we not erode the original intent?
