Ed Stein
Ed Stein. I was born in the Eschwege Displaced Persons Camp in the U.S. Military Zone of Occupation, Germany in 1947. My parents were both Holocaust survivors who met and married after the War. My mother was born in Kisvárda, Hungary-in late May 1944, my mother, her parents, and other relatives were deported to Auschwitz where both of her parents were murdered. After two months, my mother was sent to Stutthof where she performed forced labor on a regional farm, and survived one of the infamous death marches. My father was born in Berlin and grew up in Nazi Germany; under complicated circumstances, he and his parents were allowed to emigrate to Budapest, Hungary in June 1942. He survived, after enduring the Hungarian Forced Labor system in May 1944. We emigrated to the United States in Dec. 1947. I did my university studies in chemistry eventually receiving a doctorate in chemistry from MIT in Boston, where I’ve lived to this day. I’ve been self-employed for most of my work career and retired in 2021. Retirement has afforded me the opportunity to work on a family history, which has been extremely gratifying and has kept me extremely busy.
