A Freemason perspective on Faith and Society
In Europe, and to a lesser extent in the United States, there is a high degree of secularization. More and more people are leaving the church. For many people, this has meant the loss of trust in life. Whether consciously or not, they feel vulnerable and unsafe. They can cover up these feelings by over-consumption and entertainment, or they seek refuge in fake theories, fundamentalism or demagogues who offer false security. This is a major cause of Code Red for our democracy and climate. The traditional religions have no solution for this. However, from the viewpoint of Freemasonry, I would like to sketch a new perspective.
Freemasons start from a high principle, which they call ‘The Great Architect of the Universe'. From outside Freemasonry, this principle is equated with 'god', but that is too shortsighted. Freemasons are free in how they wish to interpret this principle. In this sense, Freemasonry differs from traditional religions: there is no doctrine or theologically founded dogma. In this contribution, I will give a personal elaboration of how this principle can be worked out, and how it could be accepted by both believers and those who are not Freemasons or followers of any of the known religions. This could lead to a new and fresh faith, through which we feel empowered and we can stand in the world with resilience and creativity.
Presenter
- Erik van Praag is a Dutch Freemason and holds a master's degree in psychology and planned change from the University of Amsterdam. He is also trained as a psychotherapist, and is an accredited facilitator for Essential Peacemaking/Women and Men and the Transformation Game (Findhorn). He has worked as a psychotherapist, business consultant and personal coach with a special focus on the climate problem and spirituality. He has organized several international conferences about spiritual leadership and worked outside the Netherlands in the United States, Russia, Czech Republic, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland and Palestine. He has written some fourteen books of which the following have been translated into English: Room for Happiness (2001), Spiritual Leadership (2004) and Earth Fever (2009).
