=== Future of God I: Introduction - The Meaning Crisis and the Future of God ===
Humanity Rising Week of Programing June 10-14, 2024

Organizer - Michael Putz

Intro/Scene Setting: The West is facing what many describe as a ‘metacrisis’ - a convergence of social, environmental, political and cultural crises - while at the same time facing a meaning crisis, a collective atmosphere of existential despair and declining mental health that make it more difficult to grapple with the metacrisis. Modernism and Postmodernism have thoroughly deconstructed the legacy shared meaning-making structures of the West (which many see as a boon, as they were anchored in a premodern Judeo-Christian conception of God) while at the same time making it nearly impossible to create new ones, exacerbating a sense of nihilism at the very time we need to marshal collective action to address the metacrisis.

The focus of this week is the “Future of God” - does theism have a place in addressing the meaning crisis? Can it be part of a post-postmodern future that integrates the insights and critiques of modernism and postmodernism in a credible way? We will explore emerging innovations and trends in theistic belief and practice that are attempting to do just that.

Week Outline:

Day 1 - Introduction - The Meaning Crisis and the Future of God - Michael Putz

Day 2 - WeSpace - Making God Accessible through Innovations in Participatory Mystical Practice - Luke Healy

Day 3 - TLC (This Little Corner of the Internet) - Christian Minister’s Response to the Meaning Crisis - Paul VanderKlay

Day 4 - Knowing our Place in the Field of Love- Jan Byars

Day 5 - Multi-faith and Developmental Perspectives on the Future of God - Bob Rees and Gloria Gardner

Day 1 - Introduction - The Meaning Crisis and the Future of God

The West is facing what many describe as a ‘metacrisis’ - a convergence of social, environmental, political and cultural crises - while at the same time facing a meaning crisis, a collective atmosphere of existential despair and declining mental health that make it more difficult to grapple with the metacrisis. Modernism and Postmodernism have thoroughly deconstructed the legacy shared meaning making structures of the West (which many see as a boon, as they were anchored in a premodern Judeo-Christian conception of God) while this same time making it nearly impossible to create new ones, exacerbating a sense of nihilism at the very time we need to marshal collective action to address the metacrisis.

In today's session Michael will provide a brief overview of the meaning crisis, provide some guidelines for evaluating any proposed theistic solutions to the Meaning Crisis, and introduce the four speakers for the week. This session will include a brief overview of the work of John Vervaeke, a pioneer in developing frameworks and practices for addressing the meaning crisis.
