In their book, ''Deaths of Despair,'' social scientists Anne Case and Angus Deaton say, "In the past two decades, deaths of despair from suicide, drug overdose, and alcoholism have risen dramatically, and now claim hundreds of thousands of American lives each year--and they're still rising." Their research shows that men are at higher risk than women and these trends are occurring world-wide.

| In 2004, Drs. Daniel J. Kruger and Randolph M. Nesse, conducted a study that measured the overall male to female mortality ratio in twenty different countries and found that in each one studied, males lived sicker and died sooner than females. '''They offered three clear conclusions:'''
