As a result, there is nowhere left on planet Earth that has not been somehow damaged, changed, eroded or polluted by human activity. What is important in this session is that colonialism has been as hard on indigenous peoples as it has been on the environment. In the first 100 years after Columbus seized Santo Domingo for Spain in 1492, 90% of the indigenous population of the entire Western Hemisphere had been wiped out, mostly by disease but also by war and the systematic destruction of indigenous ways and culture.
The Q’ero people in Peru provide an example of how a people survived the carnage that occurred for indigenous peoples. They are the direct descendants of the Inca. Upon the arrival of the conquistadors they fled to the high Andes and set up 12 villages at the 16,000-18,000ft There they protected and kept intact their language and their deep knowledge and have only in the late 1960s came down from the mountains and are now sharing with the rest of humanity the ways to live in accordance and in balance with the cycles of the moon, the cycles of the sun and all of nature.
For more than 1,000 years, the Q'ero have been teaching both sustainable and renewable agriculture as well as holistic medicine using natural plants and ceremony. Their language along with the ways they teach are intact and have not been tainted by the conquistadors, the dark ages or the "industrial revolution" that has progressively alienated the people of the Western world from their own nature.
We will also hear from representatives of North American indigenous people.
