Just in the last decade, there is a flood of biotech money flowing into the science of aging. There have been many successful experiments extending lives of lab animals, and investors are convinced at last that it is feasible to slow aging in humans. But there are two big problems. First, all this money steers research toward Intellectual Property, and the best interventions we have are not patentable. Research priorities are skewed toward making money rather than extending life. Second, there are basic misunderstandings about the cause of aging. There are 5 stories floating around about what aging is, and they are all obviously wrong. Most of the research is based on repairing damage that happens at the cellular level, but aging is controlled at a system-wide level. The most spectacular success in rejuvenating old rats is unknown by most mainstream researchers in aging. The basic research needed to translate this technique to humans is not being pursued as vigorously as it deserves.

The Mayan calendar system is unique among ancient sources of knowledge in that it provides precise information on the timing of the evolution of consciousness in the universe. Josh Mitteldorf earned a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Pennsylvania, and switched mid-career into the biology of aging. In his writing, he blends science, spirituality, and a profound sense of social responsibility. He has written a popular book and an academic book on the biology of aging. His websites include Aging Matters Blog, Experimental Frontiers, the Daily Inspiration, and Unauthorized Science. His page at AgingAdvice.org offers a basic program for life extension. Dr Mitteldorf's latest book of poetry is based on the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. He lives in Philadelphia, where he teaches a weekly yoga class and plays piano in chamber music groups and French horn in a community orchestra. His two daughters were adopted from China in the 1980s, breaking diplomatic ground for a wave of Chinese-American adoptions in the following decades.
